Grab Bag of Questions

It can be a big help to think up some topics and questions beforehand, especially with children. With extended family, the adults likely will not have difficulty finding things to talk about. Even among adults, however, it can be entertaining and even enlightening to throw out a few unexpected thought-provoking questions and see where the conversation leads.

One approach that can be fun and help draw children into the conversation is to come up with a range of open-ended questions. Write them on slips of paper and put them in a small container or pouch to be drawn out at random. They can be a big jumble, or you can color-code by category. General conversation starters. Questions for kids to ask parents. Questions for parents to ask kids. Questions about dreams or feelings.

A Few Questions to Get You Started

Here are a few examples. We are sure you can come up with many more. The important things are that the questions be relevant to your family and situation, that they provoke some thought and are fun or interesting or both.
